    The A-B Signal Detection Theory Model

    The purpose of this research was threefold: (1) Present the a-b SDT model as an alternative framework to overcome the limitations of the underlying SDT model and the traditional measures of sensitivity and criterion setting, (2) Provide empirical support to validate the adequacy of the a-b SDT model, and (3) Conduct a Monte Carlo Study to compare and contrast the strengths and weaknesses of both the traditional and the a-b SDT models across the full spectrum of response values with the goal of providing researchers and practitioners with recommendations regarding the adequacy of each model. The results from this research have both theoretical implications and practical applications. The findings from the empirical study suggest that Green and Swets (1966)\u27s contention that the detection and response processes are independent from each other is questionable. Furthermore, the findings from the Monte Carlo Study suggest that the a-b SDT model provides more accurate measures to capture the dependency between these two processes. This is particularly important for researchers and practitioners who are interested in studying human-automation interaction factors and how sensory and perceptual factors may affect humans\u27 response biases while interacting with automated systems

    Migration Industries and the State: Guestwork Programs in East Asia

    Studies of migration industries have demonstrated the critical role that border-spanning businesses play in international mobility. To date, most research has focused on meso-level entrepreneurial initiatives that operate in a legal gray area under a state that provides an environment for their growth or decline. Extending this work, the present article advances a taxonomy of the ways states partner with migration industries based on the nature of their relationship (formal or informal) and the type of actor involved (for-profit or non-profit). The analysis focuses on low-paid temporary migrant work programs — schemes that require substantial state involvement to function — and examines cases from the East Asian democracies with strong economies that have become net importers of migrants: Taiwan, Japan, and South Korea.     Using Likelihood Alert Technology in Cockpit Displays of Traffic Information to Support Free Flight

    The future of air traffic control imposes two major challenges. On the one hand, the increase in air traffic flow will dramatically augment the already existing high levels of workload for air traffic controllers. As a result, this increase in traffic density may jeopardize flight safety. On the other hand, standard aircraft separation tactics commanded by air traffic controllers are neither optimally efficient nor cost effective. Consequently, this makes it difficult for airlines to maintain an economic advantage. A potential solution to these problems is the introduction of free flight. The main goal of free flight is to reduce the level of workload of air traffic controllers and increase the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of aircraft separation by allowing pilots to make their own deviation decisions. However, the safe and efficient implementation of free flight will require state of the art cockpit displays of traffic information (CDTI) as well as advanced decision support tools (DSTs), which will need to be coupled with effective alerting algorithms. The purpose of this paper is to suggest the implementation of likelihood alert technology in CDTI, which may lead pilots to make more accurate decisions by allowing them to distinguish which conflicts are more likely to occur

    Effects of Workload and Likelihood Information on Human Response to Alarm Signals

    The purpose of this study was to examine how workload and likelihood information would affect participants’ responses to alarm signals while they performed a battery of tasks. As expected, participants’ overall response rates and false alarm response rates were significantly lower, and true alarm response rates were significantly higher when they used a likelihood alarm system. These results were particularly noticeable under high workload conditions. Results from this study suggest that although people may respond less often to alarm signals when they are provided with likelihood information, they will more likely respond to true signals rather than false alarms. Therefore, designers should incorporate likelihood information in alarm systems to maximize people’s ability to differentiate between true and false alarms and respond appropriately
